The kid we built this for

Picture a twelve-year-old who gets cut at tryouts. Nobody really tells him why.

He plays the season on a different team. He works hard. At the end of the year he gets a handshake and a "good season, buddy." Then summer starts, and he has no idea what to work on. He doesn't know what's holding him back or what would get him to the next level. So he guesses.

That kid is on every team in every program. Sometimes he's the best player on the roster. Usually he's somewhere in the middle, which is exactly where specific feedback matters most.

What good feedback did for me

I grew up playing hockey, and I love this game.

I had good coaches and I had bad ones. The ones who made a difference weren't always the loudest or the most decorated. They were the ones who told me specifically what I was doing well, specifically what to work on, and made me believe I could get there.

That kind of feedback stays with a kid. I still remember some of it. It was specific, it was encouraging, and it gave me something to do on Monday.

Why it's so rare

Now I coach, and I understand why that kind of feedback doesn't happen more often.

It isn't because coaches don't care. Most are volunteers, or paid a fraction of what the hours are worth. They're already running practices, games, schedules, parent emails, and tournament weekends. Their assistants are stretched just as thin.

Giving seventeen players real, individual feedback takes hours. Remembering what each kid said they wanted to work on back in September takes more. So it gets squeezed into a few generic lines, or it doesn't happen at all. Not for lack of caring. For lack of time.

Why coaches do this in the first place

Nobody signs up to coach for the scheduling.

We do it for the moment a kid figures something out. The player who couldn't hold an edge in October and wins a race to the puck in February. The quiet kid who finally believes she belongs. The look on a player's face when a coach tells them, specifically, that the work is paying off.

Hockey is a long-view game

At the youth level, the scoreboard matters less than the trajectory. A Squirt who learns to skate with his head up. A Peewee who figures out where to be without the puck. A Bantam goalie who fixes her rebound control. Those gains compound for years.

The programs that develop every player, not just the top line, are the ones that build great teams season after season. That starts with every kid knowing where they stand and where they're headed.
